The Legacy of Independent Baseball in Oregon.

1973

Hollywood’s Bing Russell founds an independent baseball team in Portland Oregon. The Portland Mavericks or, “The Battered Bastards of Baseball” as Netflix dubbed them, are a rebellious bunch of underdogs who stand up to Big Baseball until they are muscled out in 1978.

First: The Mavs running a victory lap with brooms to indicate another “Sweep”. Second: Kurt Russell, played for the club for a month in its inaugural season in 1973.

1997

Jerry Walker relocates his family and his baseball team, the Bellingham Giants, to Oregon and builds a new stadium, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes begin.

2020

Big Baseball strikes again.

The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes lose their Giants affiliation. They have a stadium, but no league to play in. Remembering the plight of the Portland Mavericks, the Walker family create their own independent league. The Mavericks League is born with 4 teams sharing the stadium and pitted against each other each season.

Bringing the Mavs back just a little to the South.

2024

The Mavericks League update their field with a $2.2 million investment. They want to pair this with a brand refresh across the whole league and a new effort to pull in fans.

That’s where Haloumi comes in.

Fresh field, fresh look.

It’s not the real world, it’s the ballpark.

Brand Refresh

Flyballs in the stands, songs in the third inning, as many hotdogs as you can eat, the ballpark has always been a world of its own. We are highlighting the classic Americana experience of baseball, pulling a design aesthetic from the Mavericks’ 70’s roots and bringing in a new generation of fans who are there to experience the freedom of the ballpark as much as the game.

New look

With little-to-no brand identity previously established, the Mavericks League needed a strong visual identity that could work with each team and across multiple platforms. We started with an updated brand guide, website redesign, social templates, and pocket schedule to explore and establish a new visual identity for the league.
